OZZIE NEWSOME
"The greatest end in Alabama history..." - Bear Bryant.
Ozzie Newsome was born in Muscle Shoals, Alabama on March 15, 1956. He attended Colbert County High School in Leighton, Alabama before moving on to the University of Alabama in 1974. During his 4 year collegiate career, he caught more than 100 passes and helped his team win three SEC Championships. In his senior year in 1977, he was named team captain, was named SEC lineman of the year as well as being an All-America selection. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1994. He was a first round draft pick by the Cleveland Browns in 1978, where he would play his entire 13 season NFL career. He was an instant success, being named Offensive Player of the Year in his first season. At the time of his retirement in 1990, he held the record for pass receptions by a tight end at 662. At one stage, he played in 198 consecutive games and caught passes in 150 consecutive games. He held All-Pro honors is 1979 and 1984 and was selected for the Pro-Bowl three times, following the 1981, 1984 and 1985 seasons. He entered the Pro-Football Hall of Fame in 1999. Following his retirement from playing, Ozzie Newsome has held a number of administrative positions in the game. On November 25, 2002, he became the first African-American to hold the position of General Manager, when he was given the role by the Baltimore Ravens. He still holds this position today.
