GEORGE "MULE" SUTTLES
George Suttles was born on March 2, 1901 in Brockton, Louisiana. His childhood was spent in the Birmingham area.
At the age of 17, his Negro League Baseball career began with the Birmingham Black Barons. In a career that lasted 25 years, he became one of the most feared hitters in the Negro Leagues and was known in some circles as "The Black Babe Ruth." Over the course of his career, not only did he play for the Black Barons, but also the Baltimore Black Sox, St. Louis Stars, Detroit Wolves, Washington Pilots, Cole's American Giants, Newark Eagles, Indianapolis ABCs and the New York Black Yankees. During his time with the St. Louis Stars, he led the league twice in home runs, and once each in doubles, triples and batting average. In the five East-West All-Star games that he played, he had a batting average of .412 and a slugging percentage of .883. In 26 documented games against white Major League players, he had a batting average of .374 with 5 home runs. He also has the distinction of being the first player ever to hit a home run in an East-West game. During the course of his entire career, his batting average was a very impressive .321. After retiring from the game, he went on to be field manager of the Newark Eagles. George "Mule" Suttles died in Newark, New Jersey in 1968.
